A memorial event for anyone affected by baby loss

An afternoon to remember your baby, in a quiet garden, with people who understand. Come for the ceremony, walk the trail, or simply sit for a while — whatever feels right to you on the day.

The first 20 people to register their attendance will have a free well-being pack reserved for them (one per household), with teddies donated by Aching Arms, the charity bringing comfort after pregnancy and baby loss.

Throughout Baby Loss Awareness Week, ribbons will be on display in the garden — pink, white or blue, each one carrying the name of a baby who is remembered. At the ceremony there will also be a moment to say your baby’s name out loud, if you would like to.

The first 20 families to register will have a free well-being pack reserved for them — one per household.

If your baby wasn’t named, you can write ‘Baby’ and your surname. Their name will be added as a star in the sky below.

The Twinkling Stars Appeal

When a baby dies, their mum is usually cared for on the same maternity ward as mums whose babies are with them — surrounded by newborns crying, and people asking whether it was a boy or a girl.

Some hospitals are now creating maternity bereavement suites: a private space away from everyone else, with a double bed so a partner can stay while medical procedures take place, and a cold cot so a baby can stay with their family for as long as their parents need. Kettering General Hospital is creating one.

Maddie has linked up with Northamptonshire Health Charity so that families can help fund it — almost like a legacy in their baby’s name.

If you would like to give

  1. Open the Twinkling Stars Appeal page on the Northamptonshire Health Charity website.
  2. In the description box on the donation page, please add:

    Specifically for the development of the bereavement maternity suite at Kettering General hospital, following a memorial service from Maddie The Happy Celebrant

  3. That way your gift goes to the suite, and at the end of each year the charity lets Maddie know how much has been raised in memory of the babies.

Donations go straight to Northamptonshire Health Charity — Maddie never holds anyone’s money. There is no obligation at all: the memorial is free to attend, whether or not you give.

Who’s holding the day

Hi, I’m Maddie The Happy Celebrant!

I am a multi award-winning, ethical, independent celebrant, passionate about making meaningful, personalised ceremonies as a way of honouring and celebrating life-events.

For the past two years I have been looking for ways to give back to my community and am proud of the reputation I have developed for my inclusive ceremonies. As part of my commitment to the environment, I purchase a tree after every ceremony that I perform, which is then planted on your behalf, through Ecologi, an organisation who manage reforestation programs across the world.

The Annual Towcester Wave of Light Ceremony

The Wave of Light is an international event that always takes place on 15 October, as part of Baby Loss Awareness Week. At 7pm everyone lights their candles at the same time, producing a Wave of Light across the UK.

This will be the third annual Wave of Light that Maddie and Naomi have organised for the Towcester community. In the weeks leading up to it, Naomi collects the names of babies gone too soon, from families who wish for their baby to be remembered. The names are added to blue, pink or white ribbons and displayed for the whole of Baby Loss Awareness Week.

On the night, the platform is decorated with fairy lights. Maddie leads a short ceremony of five to ten minutes, with the opportunity to say your baby’s name out loud. At 7pm candles and lanterns are lit, and afterwards there is hot chocolate and cake for anyone who would like to stay and chat to other parents.
